Brian Jones, (Lewis Brian Hopkin Jones), 7/28/42 - 7/3/69. Born in Chetlenham, England, Brian was an original member of the Rolling Stones. He was a vocalist, keyboardist, guitarist and saxophonist. His death at age 27 made him one of the first members of music's famous who died aged 27 referred to as the “27 Club”. He was known for his excessive drug use and rowdy lifestyle. Brian drowned in his pool while under the influence.

I often wonder what would have happened if Brian had lived. As the story goes, Mick joined the band and he felt pushed out of the spotlight. That's not hard to imagine considering that Mick is bigger than life and there was not enough room on stage for two big egos (that's not a put-down, ego was needed to front this band!). If a picture says a thousand words, then a video clip says even more. This is from 1966.

Jimi Hendrix, (James Marshall Hendrix), 11/27/42 - 9/18/70. Born in Seattle, Washington, Jimi is often considered the greatest guitarist in rock and roll. He is known for playing guitar left-handed and behind his back. He headlined the famous Woodstock Music Festival in 1968. Jimi was the second member of "The 27 Club”. He asphyxiated on his vomit after ingesting a heavy dose of barbiturates.

Most of the great guitarists of our day have been in some way influenced by Jimi. His music is as good today as it was back then. I see kids wearing Jimi Hendrix t-shirts and smile. I don't think he will ever be forgotten. There have always been rumors that he was murdered, but sadly I think he was another victim of drug abuse. Forgot to mention above that Jimi also played with his teeth! Here's a short video clip, if you can dig it.

Alan Wilson, (Alan Christie Wilson) 7/4/43 – 9/30/70. Born in Boston, Massachusetts. Alan was the leader, singer and song writer for Canned Heat. He performed at two of the greatest concerts of the 1960’s, The Monterey Pop Festival and Woodstock. Alan died of a barbiturate overdose, many believe it was suicide. He was 27.

What was it about the age 27? Alan was number 2 of 9 of the people I have listed here, but there are many, many more (check out this list on Wikipedia!)that I know of who died at that age. I have two songs by Canned Heat on my iPod, wonder if there would have been more had Alan lived? Suicide and drug overdose is so prevalent among rock musicians. Its hard for a lot of people to understand being so low you don't want to live, but then again there are many of us who do know. I think in this era there is so much more help for depression. Thankfully.

Janis Joplin, 1/19/43 – 10/4/70. Born in Port Arthur, Texas. Janis grew up in a conservative family. Due to her talent for singing the blues she rose to fame in the 1960s as the lead singer of Big Brother and the Holding Company and eventually a solo career. Janis was the first female to cross over into rock and roll successfully and inspired many women after her. She struggled with drug addiction and died of an overdose. Janis was the third member of the "27 Club.

Janis. Oh, Janis. I've written about her many times on my other blogs. Her voice is still stand-out unique. She was able to communicate with her voice even when she used no words, just the sounds of an aching heart. Its said that she changed rock music by opening the door for other women. I can't say there has been anyone that has as much soul and passion since, but a few come close. As a person I think many women, myself included, can relate to her longing for love and the disappointments of failed relationships. She had so much to give and was willing to give it all. She did give it all...damn it. I understand, I really do. Especially since my own son is addicted to the same drug. Why is there so much pain in the world? How can a woman surrounded by people feel so alone?

Jim Morrison, (James Douglas Morrison), 12/8/43 – 7/3/71. Born in Melbourne, Florida he grew up in a military family. Jim was a poet, a singer and a songwriter. He was best known as the lead singer of The Doors, and is considered to be one of the most charismatic and influential frontmen in the history of rock music. He was also an author of several poetry books, a documentary, short film, and three early music videos ("The Unknown Soldier", "Moonlight Drive", and "People are Strange"). Jim died in Paris at the age of 27 making him the fourth member of the “27 Club”. There has never been a confirmed cause of death, but "heart attack" induced by drug use is the most common theory.

I fell in love with Jim when I was 12 years old. He'd been dead for awhile but when I heard The Doors - and saw a photo of him - I was hooked. Has there ever been a more beautiful face or a more haunting voice (that was a rhetorical question!). Since then I've read a lot about him and respect him in spite of his many character flaws, after all, don't we all have plenty ourselves? I think he was a poet first, then a songwriter, then a performer. I believe Jim was frustrated that people did not appreciate The Doors music in the way he intended. Yet, in the midst of it all, he got caught up in the typical lifestyle of super-stardom. Those things may have contributed to his drinking/drug problems. I wonder what he'd be doing today if he were still here?

Duane Allman, (Howard Duane Allman), 11/20/46 – 10/29/71. Born in Nashville, Tennessee, Duane was known for playing slide guitar and was a founding member of The Allman Brothers Band. He was known for being a great slide guitar player and appeared as a session musician on albums by Eric Clapton and others. He died in a motorcycle accident at age 24.

My introduction to Duane Allman was in the summer of '75. I was at Main Beach in Laguna and noticed a whitewashed brick wall in the distance. It was just sitting there on the beach like it used to be part of something but only that wall remained. Very odd. The front of the wall said "Duane Allman - We Love You". There were other things written on it too, little tributes to Duane. There were objects left on top of the wall (don't remember what). After seeing the wall my interest was piqued. Back in those days you had to research in the library OR ask your best friends older brother :) I heard the story of Duane. Since then I have listened to his music with a lot of respect and a sense of loss for a GREAT SLIDE GUITARIST.

Berry Oakley, (Raymond Berry Oakley), 4/1/48 – 11/21/72. Berry was born in Chicago, Illinois. He was a founding member of the Allman Brothers and was known for his long melodic bass playing. Sadly only a year after losing Duane Allman, Berry died of a brain hemorrhage after a motorcycle crash. Berry was 24.

I can not imagine what it was like for the band to lose another member in the same way just a year later! 24 years old. They persevered and are still around today, too bad Berry did not live to enjoy the success.

Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, 9/8/45 – 3/8/73. Born in San Fransisco, California he was a founding member of the band Grateful Dead. He was sang, played organ, harmonica, percussion, and occasionally guitar. Pigpen began experiencing congenital liver problems, likely exacerbated by his years of excessive drinking after suffering a gastrointestinal hemorrhage. He was 27.

Another 27...this makes six, three more to come. The Grateful Dead, to this day, has such a strong following. I can only imagine the sadness that gripped each fan when they heard the news that he had passed. His grave marker aptly says, "Pigpen was, and forever now is, one of the Grateful Dead".

Gram Parsons, (Cecil Ingram Connor), 11/5/46 - 9/19-1973, Gram was born in Winter Haven, Florida. He was a member of several bands including The Byrds and The Flying Burrito Brothers. Known for writing music, playing guitar and piano he was well respected by other musicians. Gram died of a heart failure from tequila & morphine overdose . He was 26.

Sad. So much talent...gone so soon. The story of his death and what happened afterward is incredible, "In the late 1960s, Parsons became enamored of Joshua Tree National Monument in southeastern California. Alone or with friends, he would disappear in the desert for days searching for UFOs while under the influence of psilocybin or LSD. Less than two days after arriving, Parsons died September 19, 1973 in Joshua Tree, California at the age of 26 from a lethal combination, purportedly of morphine and alcohol. According to Fisher in the 2005 biography Grievous Angel: An Intimate Biography of Gram Parsons, the amount of morphine consumed by Parsons would be lethal to three addicts and thus he had likely overestimated his tolerance considering his past experience with opiates. Fisher and McElroy were returned to Los Angeles by Kaufman, who dispersed the remnants of Parsons' stash in the desert.

Parsons' body disappeared from the Los Angeles International Airport where it was being readied to be shipped to Louisiana for burial. Prior to his death, Parsons stated that he wanted his body cremated at Joshua Tree and his ashes spread over Cap Rock, a prominent natural feature there; however, Parson's stepfather arranged for a private ceremony back in New Orleans and neglected to invite any of his friends from the music industry.To fulfill Parsons' "funeral" wishes, Kaufman and a friend stole his body from the airport and in a borrowed hearse drove it to Joshua Tree where they attempted to cremate it by pouring five gallons of gasoline into the open coffin and throwing a lit match inside. What resulted was an enormous fireball. Police chased them, but according to one account they were unencumbered by sobriety and got away. The two were arrested several days later. Since there was no law against stealing a dead body, they were only fined $750 (or $700) for stealing the coffin and were not prosecuted for leaving 35 lbs of his charred remains in the desert."

Jim Croce, 1/10/43 – 9/20/73, Jim was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a talented singer/song writer and played the piano, guitar and harmonica. Jim was best known for his hits Bad Bad Leroy Brown, and Time in a Bottle. The album “I Got a Name” was released posthumously and some believe Jim had yet to produce his best work, while others maintain that his death was what gave his music publicity. He died in a plane crash. Jim was 30.

I was shocked by the news of Jim's death. That summer I had spent a lot of time with an older cousin who played all of Jim Croce's well known songs on his guitar. In a way it seemed like a personal loss because he was so open in his lyrics, you felt like you knew him.

Duke Ellington, (Edward Kennedy Ellington) 4/29/1899 - 5/24/74. Born in Washington DC, Duke was one of the twentieth century's best-known African-American celebrities. He was a band-leader, pianist and composer. Along with numerous other awards and accolades he was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1966. Duke died of lung cancer. He was 75.

An icon. Glad he lived a long life. I hope someone volunteers to share their thoughts on Mr. Ellington since I don't feel qualified having not listened to much of his music.

Cass Elliot, (Ellen Naomi Cohen ), 9/19/41 – 7/29/74. Cass was born in Baltimore, Maryland. She is best remembered as Mama Cass of the pop quartet The Mamas & the Papas. After the group broke up, she had a successful solo career, releasing nine albums. Elliot was found dead in her hotel room in London from an apparent heart attack after two sold-out performances at the Palladium. She was 32.

California Dreamin....Mama Cass had a great voice. Its sad that she died so young and suddenly. I am sure the people who saw her perform those last two nights must have felt a bittersweet connection to the concerts they attended.

Bill Chase, (William Edward Chiaiese), 10/24/34 – 8/9/74. Bill was born in Boston, Massachusetts. He was a rock-jazz musician with a band called “Chase”. He played the trumpet. He died along with 3 of his bandmates in a plane crash. Bill was 39.

Wow. I suppose the reason so many musicians are lost in planes is because they travel extensively. Three people lost, it won't be the last time. Very sad. RIP, Bill.

Nick Drake, (Nicholas Rodney Drake), 6/9/48 - 11/25/74. Nick was born in Arden, England. He landed a record deal at age 20 and went on to make several albums. Nick was known for playing the guitar but also played piano, clarinet and sax. His music continues to gain audiences to this day and he is considered one of the most influential English songwriters of the last 50 years. Nick suffered from severe depression which led to his overdose and suicide at the age of 26.

I have loved music since I was 4 years old. A guy I was dating (not at age 4, more like 24) was stunned and disappointed that I did not know who Nick Drake was. I made it my goal to find out and yes, I loved his unique lyrics and can easily see how his depression influenced his music. Another tragic loss that breaks my heart. I've lost four people in my life to suicide, two of my closest friends and two cousins. I understand, but I hate the way it devastates those left behind.

Peter William Ham, 4/27/47 - 4/24/75. Peter was born in Swansea, South Wales. He formed a local rock group called The Panthers which evolved into The Ivey which eventually became Badfinger. Peter co-wrote many of their hit songs. He hung himself after years of disputes with his former financial manager. Pete was 27.

Number 7 of the "27 Club". I loved Badfinger as I was growing up and don't remember hearing of his death, media news ("the news" in the old days) was a bit different back then. I've read the details behind his death and its tragic. I am an advocate for helping victims of suicide (those of us left behind) understand it better and hopefully lessen the bitterness and anger that inevitably surfaces. But in this case, it seems like he was running from his problems leaving behind his girlfriend who was 8 months pregnant with his daughter.

Tim Buckley, (Timothy Charles Buckley III) 2/14/47 - 6/29/75. Born in Washington DC, Tim was a vocalist and musician who's music style is hard to define but has been referred to as jazz, funk, soul and avant-garde rock. He was father to the late Jeff Buckley. Tim died of an accidental heroin overdose He was 28.

Jeff looks so much like his father and inherited his talent as well as his good looks. I don't know much about Tim Buckley but it sure is a shame he never lived to hear his son's stunningly beautiful voice and witness his success.

Tommy Bolin, (Thomas Richard Bolin), 8/1/51 – 12/4/76. Tommy was born in Sioux City, Iowa. He was a guitarist with Zephyr, The James Gang and Deep Purple and also had a solo career. Tommy had a heavy drug problem. It was after opening for Jeff Beck that he partied on a combination of drugs and alcohol that he died. There are conflicting reports of the actual cause of death. He was 25.

Again, incredible talent that was nipped in the bud due to drug and alcohol abuse. Tommy was a self taught, versatile and very talented guitarist. No doubt he had great future in front of him. "Tommy Bolin burst upon the mid-seventies scene like a ball of fire, bringing jazz inventiveness to the heavy metal style. Just as quickly, it seems, the flame was out, but the afterglow is still with us." The funny thing about "accidental overdoses" is that they are really another form of suicide, its the Russian roulette method.

Elvis Presley, (Elvis Aaron Presley,) 1/8/35 – 8/16/77. Elvis was born in Tupelo, Mississippi. He is considered by many to be “The King of Rock and Roll”. In addition to being a singer/songwriter and playing guitar, he also had a successful acting career. His lifestyle took a toll on his health and Elvis died as a result of a drug induced heart attack. Elvis died at age 42.

He was a turning point in rock and roll. His influence is everywhere from his dance moves to his sensual sneer. Talent? Sure he had it, he was original and gusty. I think it was more about the larger than life presence and his great looks. But like so many others he could not deal with life on its own terms. Was it fame? Depression? An emptiness that money, women and material objects could not fill? Expectations that he could not live up to? Who knows. There's a scene in the movie "Rattle and Hum" where Larry Mullens Jr. sits on Elvis's bike at Graceland. Larry was obviously honored and thrilled. It was very moving. There was something about Elvis that made him lovable, like rooting for the underdog. But also a sadness when he ended up doing the whole Vegas thing. Sometimes its better to walk away and leave them crying for more instead of trying to please everyone up to the last minute. He was only human. I think people made him feel like he was a god and so he acted like one sometimes.

Marc Bolan, (Mark Feld) (aka Toby Tyler), 9/30/47 – 9/16/77. Born in London, England. Marc was one of the original glam rockers and was one of the founding members of T-Rex. Ironically March never owned a car or learned to drive out of fear of early death due to a car accident. He was killed when the car he was a passenger in hit a tree. Marc was 29.

I love Marc Bolan. I love the way sang, his glamrock image, his looks; the fact that he did things his way. Here is a quote from a book called "The Brisish Invasion" by Nicholas Shaffner that puts it like this, "a spunky little dreamer who looked and played the part of an elvish minstrel; whose bizarre voice and songs were dismissed by critics as a fleeting novelty or, worse, a bad joke; and whose most laughable trait of all was a near-mystical belief in his own importance and destiny - in short, a surefire loser who played by rules all his own and went on to become the biggest pop star in Britain."

Ronnie van Zant, (Ronald Wayne Van Zant), 1/15/48 – 10/20/77. Born in Jacksonville, Florida, Ronnie was the lead vocalist, primary lyricist and founding member of Lynryd Skynyrd. He was the older brother of Donnie (.38 Special) and Johnny Van Zandt (Lynryd Skynyrd). He died when the plane carrying the bland to their next gig crashed as a result of no fuel. Ronnie was known for saying he would not live to be 30, he died at age 29.

I got little chills up my spine just now. Its so hard to find the words to express the loss of Ronnie, Steve and Cassie. I remember hearing the news, seeing the footage on TV and feeling so sad for the rest of the band and the families (the Gaines family especially). I have a personal connection to the song "Freebird". It was the favorite song of one of my best friends, Steve. Steve told me he wanted this song played at his funeral. Ironically two months after this plane crash took the lives of these three, Steve took his own life. We played "Freebird" at his funeral. I still can't listen to it all the way through without crying and that was 30 years ago.

Steven Gaines, 9/14/49 – 10/12/77. Born in Senecar, Missouri Steven was a co-guitarist for Lynryd Skynyrd. He wrote their hit "I Know A Little" and co wrote "You Got that Right". Steve lost his life in the plane crash along with his sister, Cassie. He was 28.

I want to thank my friend Sean for reading here discovering some errors I had written regarding Steve. I started this blog, but its truly a group effort because I rely on people to correct me when I have misinformation and to add their thoughts. Such a sad day for the band and the fans - but can you imagine what it was like for the Gaines family? Losing not one, but two children on the same day. I can't fathom the heartbreak.

Cassie Gaines, 7/15/48 – 10/20/77. Born in Senecar, Missouri Cassie was a member of The Honkettes who became the female back-up vocalists for Lynryd Skynyrd. She died in the plane with her brother, Steven. Cassie was 29.

I have a friend who went to high school with Cassie. We were talking one day and her name came up. He was amazed I knew who she was. I assumed everyone knew who she was because she was one of those who perished in this horrible crash. This beautiful young woman just happened to be singing on this tour, I am sure she was thrilled. Very tragic.

Terry Kath, 1/31/46 – 1/23/78. Born in Chicago, Illinois, Terry was the guitarist for Chicago and also played banjo, accordion and drums. He was known for creating Chicago’s guitar sound. Terry was cleaning an automatic handgun not realizing there was a round chambered. He playfully waved it around his head erratically and the gun accidentally went off killing him instantly. Terry was 31.

Tragic ending for a multi-talented musician and vocalist. Here's a quote from my friend, Darrin, who has a great respect for Terry and his musical career, "Known for his blistering guitar solos and his remarkable ability to play rhythm and lead guitar simultaneously, Terry was held in very high esteem by many of his peers including the great, Jimi Hendrix." As a gun owner myself, I can tell you that the first rule of handling any gun is to treat it as if its loaded even when you "know" its not. I wish Terry would have followed that rule.

Sandy Denny, (Alexandra Elene Maclean Denny) 1/6/47 - 4/21/78. Born in London, England Sandy was considered "the pre-eminent British folk rock singer". She began her career as a teen in the mid 1960s and was a member of Fairport Convention. She is also known for a duet with Robert Plant on Led Zeppelin IV. She died after falling down a flight of stairs which resulted in a traumatic mid-brain hemorrhage. Sandy was 31.

Sandy is one of the artists I am unfamiliar with so have no personal thoughts to share. In reading about her I've learned that her legacy lives on and today people are still doing covers of some of her songs. She's the only person to ever appear as a guest on a Zeppelin album, you can hear her beautiful voice in the song "The Battle of Evermore". There was some controversy over her death, was the fall caused by drug use or by a brain tumor? Either way, she left us way too soon.

Keith Moon, 8/23/46 - 9/7/78. Born in London England, Keith was the drummer for The Who. Considered one of the best drummers of all time he was also known for his wild and destructive lifestyle. Keith died of an accidental overdose on Hemenephirin. He was 32.

Wild. Crazy. Destructive. Daring. Reckless. Uncontrollable. There are lots of words that can describe the antics of Keith Moon. I recently saw the famous Hyatt Hotel and envisioned him tossing a TV set out the window and blowing up a toilet with a Cherry Bomb. His restless and wild nature also showed up on stage. I saw The Who in the late 70's and witnessed firsthand his blistering powerhouse drumming. I love watching old footage of him pounding away on his drum kit with every ounce of strength and energy. Its so very sad that his overdose was on a drug prescribed to help him overcome his addiction to alcohol. Like a typical addict, he took more than he needed probably thinking it would work "better" or "faster". Instead, it killed him. It was not a shocking death like some considering his lifestyle and personality. But it was a great loss to a great band. I don't think The Who was ever the same without Keith. He was far from a typical drummer in the "background" of a band. He was the centerpiece. Pete Townsend often called him "the conductor" of the band. I heard someone in an interview describe the uniqueness of his drumming by saying that Keith played "up" and Pete played "down". Sid Vicious, (John Simon Ritchie), 5/10/57 – 2/2/79. Born in London England, Sid was the bassist for the punk group, The Sex Pistols. Many agreed that Sid had no talent for playing bass, nevertheless he was in the band. He was best known for his drug addiction and many run-ins with the law. He had a failed attempt at suicide after being accused of murdering his girlfriend. Sid died of a heroin overdose. He was 21.

Sid Vicious is synonymous with punk rock. He really embodied all the attributes of what punk rock stood for: violence, wild behavior, excess drug and alcohol use, and an air of being apathetic about life in general. Unfortunately he also died young which seems to be the only acceptable end for his life. He was 21! Just a baby. Yet his name is known all over the world and he will always be an iconic figure in the punk rock movement.

Lowell George, (Lowell Thomas George) 4/13/45 - 6/29/79. Born in Hollywood, California, Lowell was was an singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and record producer, who primarily achieved fame as lead vocalist and frontman in the rock band Little Feat, where he specialized as a slide guitarist. After putting on an excellent show he returned to his hotel room and died of a heart attack that was said to be related to his heavy drug use. George was 34.

I did a little research on Lowell and found myself intrigued so tried to watch a YouTube video but all of them have been removed due to rights violations (don't you hate it when that happens to some of your favorite vids?). Lowell had just recorded his first solo album and it received great reviews. Too bad he did not live long enough to enjoy that success and create more good music. Drugs. Sigh.

Bon Scott, ( Ronald Belford Scott ) 7/9/46 – 2/19/80. Born in Kirriemuir, Scotland, Bon was lead singer for AC/DC. He was vocalist on their album “Highway to Hell”. After a heavy night of drinking he was left to sleep in a car and was found dead the next day. There is controversy over his cause of death some saying he chocked on his vomit, but the official report listed alcohol poisoning. He was 33.

Bon was often heard saying that if the band (AC/DC) didn't make it big soon he was going to quit. Less than a year after his death they came out with Back in Black, one of the best selling albums of all time. His friend, Vince Lovegrove, is quoted as saying this about Bon, "There was unquestionably an undercurrent of resigned sadness behind his impish grin. "

Ian Curtis, (Ian Kevin Curtis) 7/15/56 - 5/18/80. Ian was the vocalist and lyricist, as well as occasional guitarist and keyboardist, of the band Joy Division. People still discuss the his work today, his writing was influenced by a troubled life. Ian committed suicide. He was 23.

When Ian was a teenager he was obsessed with David Bowie and decided that he too would have a life as a musician. After watching a Sex Pistols show, he and three friends decided to start a band and Joy Division was born. Its said that many of the songs he wrote hinted of his eventual suicide. I guess no one will ever know for sure if that is true or not. There is a movie on his life called "Control", I plan to watch it soon. RIP, dear young Ian.

John Bonham, (aka Bonzo) (John Henry Bonham), 5/31/48 – 9/25/80. Born in Worcestershire, England John was drummer for the legendary band, Led Zeppelin. He is considered by many to be the best rock drummer of all time and known for using “heavy sticks” in his hard hitting drum style. John was heavy drinker and died from asphyxiation of vomit after a day and night of consuming alcohol. John was 32.

This John, and the John below him died within months of each other. I have vivid and emotional memories of hearing the horrific news. On September 25, 1980 I was in a great mood because it was my 20th birthday. I was working at the local community college and as I walked across campus to go celebrate with friends, I noticed some students gathered together obviously upset. As I approached them I could hear that they were talking about the death of John Bonaham. I could not believe it, Led Zeppelin has always been one of my favorite bands. I'd been saddened by the death of a few rockers prior to John, but this was the first time it hit me hard enough to cry. It certainly wasn't the last....

John Lennon, (John Winston Lennon), 10/9/40 – 12/8/40. Born in Liverpool, England John was a member of the Beatles and also had a successful solo career. He was shot and killed as he exited his apartment building in New York City. He was 40.

My memory of John's death is almost too eerie to discuss. I wrote about it elsewhere so let me know if you are interested in reading the whole story. The short version: I was looking at a drawing of him that a friend was doing when the news was broadcast over the radio. It was so surreal, I had to wonder if I was having a nightmare. I wasn't, someone had murdered John in cold blood. John was known for his love of peace, his desire for people to get along with one another. The irony of his violent death shocked the world. I still have a hard time thinking about it. In the case of John Lennon, I can’t say enough so I won’t attempt to say much at all. Life can be so damn unfair.

Mike Bloomfield, 2/6/45 – 5/11/81. Born in Chicago, Illinois, Mike is known as one of the best session guitarists of all time. He played with JJ Cale, John Mayal Elvin Bishop, Dylan, Al Kooper, and others. Although he died of an accidental heroin overdose, Mike was not a heavy drug user – but it only takes one time to OD. He was 37.

Never had the chance to see him play and only found one video and its not that great, the few moments he's on screen are well worth the watch, he was amazing. He was doing heroin and cocaine together, a popular way to die. Tragic.

Bob Marley, ( Robert Nesta Marley ), 2/6/45 – 5/11/81. Born in Niles, Jamaica Bob was best known for bringing Jamaican and reggae music to the rest of the world. He believed that “violence and racism could be fought with music and love”. Bob’s Rastafarian beliefs kept him from seeking early treatment for melanoma and it spread quickly throughout his body. He died of brain cancer. His final words to his son Ziggy were “money can’t buy life”. He was 36.

I hope someone will offer to share their thoughts on Bob Marley here, I don't feel I can do him justice. An icon, a legend, and he died so young.

Harry Chapin, 12/7/42 – 7/16/81. Born in Greenwich Village, New York, Harry was a much loved singer, songwriter and humanitarian. He has two number one hits, Cats In the Cradle and Taxi. Harry died in a car accident but his cause of death was a heart attack. There was on decision made as to which caused the other but its believed that the heart attack caused him to wreck his car. Harry was 38.

Another excellent story teller. Its hard not to be moved when listening to his lyrics. When I hear his song "Taxi" I can see images of the scene in my head, the rain, the woman in the back of the taxi, the recognition of an old lover... Great stuff. In fact it was so great that when he performed it for the first time, on The Tonight Show, Johnny brought him back the very next night for an encore (that was a first, not sure if it ever happened again).

Randy Rhoads, (William Randall Rhoads), 12/6/56 – 3/20/82. Born in Santa Monica, California, Randy got his first guitar at age six. He was a talented heavy metal guitarist who helped put Ozzy Osbourne back on the charts in the early 1980's. In 1982 while on tour, the band pilot took Randy for a plane ride. He was buzzing the tour bus when he clipped into some trees and crashed killing them both as the band helplessly stood by. He was 25.

I remember how upset my sister was when we heard that Randy had died. She was a big fan of Ozzy. She got to see Randy play up close when she had front row seats, one of the lucky ones that attended a concert during his era. He was an amazing talent still talked about today as one of the guitar greats of our time. Here's a 6 minute solo, he was also beautiful to look at.

James Honeyman-Scott, 11/4/57 – 6/16/82. Born in Hereford, England James was guitarist for The Pretenders. He also sang back-ups and co-wrote several songs. His style influenced many that followed him. James was a cocaine user and died of a heart attack induced by cocaine intolerance. He was 25.

The first time I heard The Pretenders I loved them, the edgy sound and bold lyrics. James co-wrote songs and added his unique guitar style. It was a tragedy that he died so young. Chrissie did not let it prevent the band from moving forward, in fact she had this to say ""One of the things that kept the band alive, ironically, was the death of Jimmy Scott. I felt I couldn't let the music die when he did. We'd worked too hard to get it where it was.... I had to finish what we'd started".

Karen Carpenter, 3/2/50 – 2/4/83. Born in New Haven, Connecticut Karen was one half of the multi-gold record winning duo, The Carpenters. She is known mostly for her voice and also played drums for the group. Karen struggled with anorexia nervosa and died of a heart attack related to complications. She was 32.

My father was a big fan of The Carpenters so I heard many hours of there music as a child growing up. Karen's voice was extraordinary, it was so clear and so easy to listen to and sing along with. I believe her struggle with anorexia brought a very misunderstood and tragic disease into the public's eye. Its painful to look at this beautiful woman in the last years of her life, so very thin and unhappy.

Pete Farndon, 6/6/52 - 4/14/83. Born in Hereford, England Pete was the bassist for and founding member of The Pretenders. A year after his bandmate James Honeyman Scott’s death, Pete’s drug habit would take his life as well. He was fired from the band when he became intolerable to work with. Two days later he drowned in his bathtub after a heroin overdose. Pete was 30.

They say we usually learn from our own mistakes rather than those of others. I'm
remined of t hat when I think of Pete Farndon so closely following the footsteps of his bandmate. Here is a quote on his influence on The Pretenders image, "Farndon played a large role in shaping The Pretenders' tough image, often wearing his biker clothing, or later, samurai gear onstage. Hynde later acknowledged that two Pretenders' songs, "Biker" and "Samurai" had "references to a Pete Farndon type of character". Heroin seems to own people and not many escape her hold vicious hold on their lives. Its horrifying to think about as the mother of a young addict. I can show all of these deaths to my son and he would say "it will never happen to me", I hope he's right.

Chris Wood, (Christopher Gordon Blandford Wood), 6/24/44 - 7/12/83. Born in Birmingham, England Chris was a founding member of the group Traffic. He played saxophone and flute. He also appeared on Jimi Hendrix’s record “Electric Ladyland”. Chris died of pneumonia while working on his first solo album. He was 39.

Chris taught himself how to play sax and flute at the age of 15! In addition to be a founding member of the super rock group, Traffic, he lent his talent to many projects and groups and musicians including: Christine McVie, Carl Palmer, Blue, Locomotive, Wooden Frog, Dr. John, Ginger Baker's Air Force. Its very sad that this talented musician lost his life so young.

Dennis Wilson, 12/4/44 – 12/28/83. Born in Inglewood, California, Dennis was the drummer and a vocalist for The Beach Boys. He struggled with alcoholism and often felt like the least appreciated of his brothers. He drowned after diving off a friend's boat, apparently intoxicated. Dennis was 39.

Like many Southern California girls, I grew up feeling like the Wilson brothers were "my band", especially when they sang songs about me (smile) and Dennis was the one I had a crush on. My grandparents lived in the same city they grew up in but I never had a Beach boy siting until years later when I was in a bar in Newport Beach. I met Dennis and talked to him, he was very handsome and very drunk. I felt sad for him. It was just a year or so later that he drowned. We all have our demons and his were very heavy.

Marvin Gaye, ( Marvin Pentz Gay Jr. ), 4/2/39 – 4/1/84. Born in Washington DC, Mavin was a singer, song-writer and played multiple instruments. He had several award winning songs and is known for his influential lyrics. Marvin was shot and killed by his father after an argument. He was 44.

I love Marvin! His voice, his lyrics, his sensuality, his class and style. It was hard to hear that he his own father killed him. Some lyrics from one of his song ironically say "Only love can conquer hate". Here he is singing that song in 1973. I still can't stand the thought that he died this way, or that he's gone forever...but certainly not forgotten.

Ricky Nelson, ( Eric Hilliard Nelson ), 5/8/40 – 12/-31/85. Born in Teaneck, New Jersey Ricky was a singer/songwriter with over 50 hit recordings. Ricky was a teenage TV star as well. He died of smoke inhalation from an on-board fire that caused the plane he was traveling in to crash. Ricky was 45.

I remember seeing re-runs of Ozzie and Harriet and thinking that Ricky was "dreamy" . I had the opportunity to see him sing his famous song "Garden Party" once when I was at an amusement park. His career had a lot of ups and downs but apparently was on an upswing when the unfortunate plane accident took his life.

Philip Paris (Phil) Lynott, 8/20/49 - 1/4/86. Phil was born in England but grew up living with his grandmother in Dublin. Best known as the vocalist and bass player for Thin Lizzy, he also produced two solo albums. Phil was addicted to drugs and alcohol which eventually led to his collapse and death. He was 36.

There are only a handful of Irish rock bands so its no surprise that Bono and Phil met and became friends. I remember hearing Bono explain that he wrote this song in reference to Phil's heroin addiction. Its a sad reminder that drugs have a powerful hold on some. Its a battleground and sometimes the drugs win.

Richard Manuel, 4/3/43 – 3/4/86. Born in Ontario, Canada Richard was a member of The band. He played piano but was best known as their drummer. Richard committed suicide by hanging. He was 42.

Another sad story of a life lost to drugs, alcohol and depression. So many artists use drugs and become despondent when their creativity dries up. That seems to be the case with Richard. On his last night he of life he performed with the band was in a "good mood". Although he did give a hint by thanking Garth Hudson (bass player) for "twenty-five years of incredible music". He then went back to the hotel and hung out with Levon Helm talking about normal things and afterward went back to his own room and hung himself. I wonder if anyone had a clue? A great loss for one of the greatest bands ever.

Cliff Burton, (Clifford Lee Burton), 2/10/62 - 9/27/86. Cliff was born in Castro Valley, California. He was a bass guitarist best known for his work with Metallica from 1982 until 1986. Cliff is thought by some to be the best bassist Metallica ever had and was known for his unique style. He died while on tour when the bus hit black ice, he was killed in the accident. Cliff was 24.

Cliff was one of the many Californian rockers who headed for Sunset Strip on the 80's to be part of the hair metal scene. But unlike many, his talent stood out as exceptional. When James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich, (Metallica) first heard him playing they assumed it was someone shredding on a guitar and upon learning that it was Cliff on bass, the recruited him into the band. Watch this video and you will see why they thought it was a guitar! Very tragic ending to such a young and talented musician.

Andy Gibb,(Andrew Roy Gibb), 3/5/58 – 3/10/88. Born in Manchester, England (although he was considered Australian, being raised in Queensland). Andy followed in the footsteps of his older brothers (The Bee Gees) becoming a singer/songwriter. He had years of success followed by drug addiction which eventually contributed to an inflammatory heart virus which ended his life. He was 30.

I can recall that many people were shocked by his death. Andy had the reputation for being a clean cut guy, although I also recall it was well known that he had a drug problem. I imagine that it was very hard for the older brothers to deal with this loss. Once again, fame + fortune = drugs = death.

John Curulewski, 10/3/50 - 2/88. Born in Chicago, Illinois, John played was a founding member and played lead guitar for STYX. He left the band after their first five albums. John died of a brain aneurysm. He was 38.

Its sad to think that so many of the men and women on this page died because of drugs, but to me, its even more tragic when they die unexpectedly from an accident or serious illness. That's the case here. John chose to leave Styx because he wanted to spend more time with his wife and son and made a living teaching guitar (some of his students went on to start successful bands). Sounds like a nice family guy living a good life that was cut short unexpectedly.

Hillel Slovak 4/13/62 - 6/25/88 Born in Haifa, Israiel, Hillel was the original guitarist and founding member of Red Hot Chili Peppers. He recorded two albums with the band, Freaky Styley (1985) and The Uplift Mofo Party Plan (1987). Hillel battled an addiction to heroin and died of an overdose shortly after returning from a successful European tour. He was 26.

Another heartbreaking loss, another victim of heroin. As I was looking for info on Hillel I read that he is originally from Israel and that his parents were Holocaust survivors. I don't know if they are still living, but I imagine they were in 1988. What would it be like to survive the worst horrors of history and then to lose your son to a drug overdose? I live in fear of that very thing. I read that Hillel was speedballing, that's what my son was into. I also found a site that his brother, James, had set up for him. On the site he sells a book he put together of Hillells' art and writing, I would love to see it. Here is what James says on the site, "My brother Hillel Slovak past away in 1988 leaving a legacy of music. His music is well renown, but who he was as a person is only known to the lucky people and friends that got to know him even if it was fora minute. Hillel wasn't just the original guitarist and co-founder of the Red hot chili peppers...he was so much more.

Roy Orbison, (Roy Kelton Orbison), 4/23/36 – 12/6/88. Born in Vernon, Texas Roy was considered a pioneer of rock music as a singer and songwriter. His career spanned forty years. Roy died of a heart attack. He was 52.

A great line in Springsteen's Thunder Road says a lot about this four-octave range singer and his emotional, often melancholy lyrics: "Roy Orbison singing for the lonely...that's me and I want you only...". Roy had a long career and was respected and admired by many of today's and yesterday's great singer/songwriters including Elvis and Bono. Along with Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne and George Harrison he formed the Traveling Wilburys. Unfortunately he only had a year with the band before his death. On their tribute to him they showed a picture of his guitar sitting in a rocking chair. I remember that image and think Roy would have liked it.

Jaco Pastorius, (John Francis Anthony Pastorius III) 12/1/51 - 9/21/87 was born in Norriston, Pensylvania. Jaco was regarded as one of the most influential bass players of all times. He played and composted mostly jazz, fusion and funk. He died as a result of brain damage received during a fight with a music club bouncer. Jaco was 35.

I was not familiar with Jaco but his name was left here in the comments as someone to add. He was voted "The Greatest Bass Player Who Has Ever Lived" by reader submissions in Bass Guitar magazine. I've checked out his music since then and understand why. In reading about his life I learned that he suffered from Bi-Polar disorder and that ultimately the use of alcohol and drugs exacerbated the disease causing his erratic behavior which ultimately led to his death. As with other deaths listed here, there's something to learn. Mental illnesses left untreated can have serious or life-threatening results. Check him out here.

Allen Collins (Larkin Allen Collins Jr.) 7/19/52 - 1/23/90. Born in Jacksonville, Florida, Allen was one of the founding members and guitarists of Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd, and co-wrote many of the band's songs with late frontman Ronnie Van Zant, including Free Bird. In 1986 wrecked his car while under the influence. The accident killed his girlfriend and left Allen paralyzed from the waist down. He died from chronic pneumonia, a complication of the paralysis. Allen was 37.

Another loss for a great band. Its hard to read the story of his life, he suffered many losses. He was in the plane when it crashes and crushed several vertebrae but recovered. Then his wife died of hemorrhaging during a miscarriage. This began his abuse of alcohol and drugs which led to the above mentioned accident. He was never able to play guitar on stage again but when Lynryd Skynyrd reunited "as part of his plea bargain for the 1986 accident, Collins addressed fans at every Skynyrd concert with an explanation of why he could not perform, citing the dangers of drinking and driving, as well as drugs and alcohol. Because of Collins' accident, the band donated a sizable amount of concert proceeds from the 1987-88 tour to the Miami Project, which is involved in treatment of paralysis.

Del Shannon, (Charles Weedon Westover), 12/30/34 – 2/8/90. Born in Grand Rapids, Michigan Del was a singer/songwriter best known for his huge hit “Runaway” in 1961. He committed suicide by shooting himself. Del was 55.

Definitely one of the most covered songs ever, "Runaway" seemed to be his magnus opus. Del's career had a lot of ups and downs over the years. He collaborated with many other musicians and was considered as a replacement for Roy Orbison in the Traveling Wilburys after Roy's death. A longtime sufferer of depression, Del was using the anti-depressant Prozac when he took his own life. This added to the ongoing controversy of whether or not certain drugs increased suicidal feelings in some patients. (sidenote: I am an advocate for anti-depressants because I believe in most cases, such as my own, they can prevent suicide. But medications affect everyone differently that's why it is critically important to be under a doctor's care and supervision).

Andy Wood, (Andrew Patrick Wood), 1/8/66 – 319/90. Born on Bainbridge Island, Washington, Andy was lead singer for Mother Love Bone and Malfunkshun. He was known for his exuberant onstage personality. He died as a result of a cerebral hemorrhage following a heroin overdose. He was 24.

One more for the list of very young men who became involved in the killer drug, heroin. I hate that shit, I really do. From what I've read of Andy he was quite a character and enjoyed going into the audience during live shows with his wireless bass. I can imagine that the ladies loved this - he's beautiful. Sadly he died before his second band, Mother Love Bone released their first record. I want to scream "WHY!?" about the drug related deaths that continue to fill this page, but instead I will ask "How?". How can we put an end to it? How can we convince people not to try it "just once". I know for a fact that's all it takes to become owned by this powerful and deadly drug. RIP Andy, you were special.

Stevie Ray Vaughan, (Stephen Ray Vaughan), 10/3/54 – 8/27/90. Born in Dallas, Texas, Stevie Ray is the most influential rhythm and blues rock guitarist of all time. Known for his passion, talent and unique sound, he is often found in the top ten of a list of “greatest guitarists”. Stevie Ray died in a helicopter crash. He was 35.

You know, its hard for me to believe that Stevie Ray is no longer here. I listen to his music so often and it feels like he should still be here, I know that sounds odd but its true. I love to share the story of the time I had the honor of meeting him. It was at a very small venue in Huntington Beach, California called "The Golden Bear". Sitting in the audience literally feet away from Stevie I was mesmerized. I could see the sweat soaking his clothes as my eyes were transfixed on those hands....that guitar. Afterward my friend and I introduced ourselves (thank you, Nuel, for insisting we meet him, I had no idea then how much it would mean to me today). Stevie was soft spoken, kind, very humble, and appreciative of our praise for his music. It was like he didn't even know how great he was. Unbelievable. Losing Stevie Ray was such a great loss to the world of guitar music. Fortunately his influence lives on and his music is still played often on any radio station worthy of being on the air. I had the privilege of meeting an extremely talented young singer/songwriter/guitarist this summer named Davy Knowles. When I met him, I told Davy he reminded me a lot of Stevie Ray. I hope he realized that was a huge heartfelt compliment of the highest acclaim - and I meant it!

Tom Fogerty, 11/9/41 - 9/6/90. Born in Berkely, California, Tom was the a singer/songwriter for Creedence Clearwater Revival. When his brother John took over the majority of lead vocals and song writing Tom left the band and the brothers remained estranged. He died of AIDS related respiratory failure/tuberculosis. Tom was 48.

Tom's life ended when a blood transfusion gave him the AIDS virus which in turn left him susceptible to many other illnesses. Most people are familiar with the discord between John and Tom Fogerty. Its not right to take sides since I wasn't there but it seems to me that both had "issues" and its hard to imagine brothers ending a relationship over music/business. I don't know what else to say.

Steve Clark, (Stephen Maynard Clark), 4/23/60 – 1/8/91. Born in Hillsborough, England he was a guitarist for Def Leppard. He modeled his playing after his guitar idol, Jimmy Page. Steve’s had a severe addiction to alcohol that threatened his career many times. He died of an accidental overdose of painkillers and alcohol. He was 30.

Okay, here is another one. Its painful to remember these deaths and to write about them. A young man in the prime of his life with one of the hottest bands of the day. He was an excellent performer and he contributed to the early success of the band. But the guys became more and more frustrated and concerned about his drinking. What I've read has painted a picture of a tight band who cared a lot for Steve and did all they could to help him. Anyone who knows much about addiction and recovery knows that there is not a thing you can do to help someone, they have to want it for themselves. Unfortunately, Steve Clark did not. This is an excellent video clip of his bandmates talking about him, it also shows some of his guitar work. What stands out to me as I watched is Rick Allen. As their drummer he was able to overcome losing an arm and he triumphed over a great physical challenge. Yet all the while watching his friend, Steve, lose his battle to alcoholism. RIP Steve...you are missed.

Steve Marriott, 1/30/47 - 4/20/91. Born in Bow, London Steve was the guitarist for Small Faces and Humble Pie. He is best remembered for his powerful blue-eyed soul vocals. Steve died of smoke inhalation when his 16th Century home caught fire. He was 44.

Steve was a self taught guitarist but was best known for his great voice. Humble Pie was a great band in the early 70's but according to other members drugs got in the way of things and they eventually broke up. His life was quite interesting, if you are interested you can read about him here. One thing I wonder about, would things have been different for him if he had got the job with The Rolling Stones? Check this is out: "After the departure of Mick Taylor in 1975 from the Rolling Stones, Marriott was considered as his replacement; however, Mick Jagger allegedly blocked the move after Marriott upstaged him during the audition. According to Ronnie Wood in his autobiography Ronnie, Marriott was Richards' first choice to replace Mick Taylor." Ten years after Steve died his friends got together and did a tribute concert to him that sounds like a fabulous evening with an all star line-up. I bet Steve would have loved it

David Ruffin, (Davis Eli Ruffin), 1/18/41 – 6/1/91. Born in Meridian, Mississippi he was a singer/dancer with The Temptations. He sang lead vocals for the first time on the song that went on to be their first number one hit, “My Girl”. David became heavily involved in drugs and died of cocaine overdose. He was 50.

The Tempations were one of the best Motown acts ever and David was one of the original five. He's been named by Rolling Stone as one of the 100 greatest vocalists of all time. That's impressive, but what impresses me more is what Marvin Gaye said of David's voice, "I heard in [his voice] a strength my own voice lacked". Unfortunately he had quite a few troubles in his life including spending some time in prison and battling with drugs and financial problems. There was some very wild rumors surrounding his death and many believed it was a planned suicide. But to me that doesn't matter now...he's gone and I choose to remember him singing and dancing and bringing a lot of joy to many people with this talent.

Miles Davis (Miles Dewey Davis III) 5/26/26 - 9/28/91. Born in Alton, Illinois Miles was one of the most influential musicians of the 20th Century. He was an American jazz trumpeter, bandleader, and composer. He recorded in every major jazz genre including, bebop, fusion, funk. Miles died from a stroke, pneumonia and respiratory failure. He was 65.

Miles Davis always had an air of intimidation about him, kind of like he knew he was cool, he knew he was the man when it came to the trumpet. Listening to Miles makes me want a cigarette, even though I don't smoke. Wish I had something more eloquent to add.

Eric Carr, (Paul Charles Caravello), 7/12/50 – 11/24/91. Eric is best known as the drummer for the rock band KISS. He replaced original drummer, Peter Criss. Eric was also a talented vocalist, bassist, guitarist and pianist. He was diagnosed and died of a rare form of heart cancer. Eric was 41.

Not being a huge KISS fan I had to do a bit of research on Eric Carr. Most people that I talk to still refer to the band's drummer as Peter Criss, which is a shame because Eric was with them longer and seemed like a very talented musician and likeable person. I recommend you follow the link on his name to read more about him. Here's one thing that intrigued me, "At the time of his successful audition, Caravello was repairing stoves with his father for a living, while playing drums in a variety of bands. He was the last drummer to audition for the band and actually asked Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons and Ace Frehley for autographs, in case he never saw them again. "But I knew I had it", he told a fanzine in 1990. According to Caravello, his audition was videotaped." Eric's death sounds horrible, that part was difficult to read.

Freddie Mercury, (Farrokh Bulsara), 9/5/46 – 11/24/91. Born on the island of Zanzibar Freddie was the much loved singer/ songwriter for Queen. He was known for his powerful vocal abilities and his charisma as a live performer. His health declined for years amidst rumors of HIV/AIDS. Just twenty four hours after issuing a statement that he had the disease, he lost his life to it. He was 45.

This was another death that brought immediate tears to my eyes. Along with many others that heard the news, it came as a shock to me because it was just the day before that he had officially announced he had AIDS. He waited a long time to share it publically and I respect his decision for doing that - to protect his family from the hounding media. Freddie was a special person to those who knew him and although his persona was bigger than life, it seemed that he was a bit shy and humble when not on state. On stage he was "godike" according to this account, "One of Mercury's most notable performances with Queen took place at Live Aid in 1985, during which the entire stadium audience of 72,000 people clapped, sang, and swayed in unison. Queen's performance at the event has since been voted by a group of music executives as the greatest live performance in the history of rock music. The results were aired on a television program called "The World's Greatest Gigs". In reviewing Live Aid in 2005, one critic wrote, "Those who compile lists of Great Rock Frontmen and award the top spots to Mick Jagger, Robert Plant, etc. all are guilty of a terrible oversight. Freddie, as evidenced by his Dionysian Live Aid performance, was easily the most godlike of them all."

Jeff Porcaro ( Jeffrey Thomas Porcaro ), 4/1/54 – 8/5/92. Born in Los Angeles, California, Jeff was a highly acclaimed drummer, best known for starting the band Toto. He was a session drummer who started his career at age 17 playing for Sonny and Cher’s touring back up band. He worked with many musicians over the years including Steely Dan, Elton John, Madonna, Paul McCartney, and Bruce Springsteen. and many others. Jeff died of an undiagnosed heart condition. He was 38.

An amazing talent! I love listening to Toto and focusing on Jeff's playing. He was obviously very much in demand (just check out the "career" section on the Wiki link). After his sudden death a memorial fund was set up in his name to benefit the music and arts department of the high school he had attended. There was also a huge tribute concert given in his honor. So sad to lose such great talent with no warning for his family, friends and fans to say goodbye. I hate that thought. Jeff also did a video series teaching some of his drum techniques. Mick Ronson, 5/26/46 – 4/29/1993. Born in Yorkshire, England, Mick was best known as guitar player for David Bowie. He also played for musicians such as Lou Reed, Ian Hunter, Bob Dylan and Mott the Hoople. In addition to guitar he played the piano, bass, harmonic, clarinet, keyboards and drums. Mick died of liver cancer. He was 46.

Whenever I think of Mick Ronson I remember David Bowie introducing him as his "good mate". It seems like Mick was an ultra-talented guy who did most of his best work in the background (by producing or by standing behind Bowie - who notices anyone else on stage when David is up there?). I think its fitting and kinda sad that his last major live performance was a the Freddie Mercury Tribute concert, he played "All The Young Dudes" with David Bowie and Ian Hunter, and "Heroes" with Bowie." I hate cancer even more than I hate heroin. Sorry to lose another great musician to that evil disease.

Frank Zappa, (Francis Vincent Zappa Jr.), 12/21/93 – 12/4/93. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Frank was known for composing and performing experimental rock/jazz music. Frank was also a passionate supporter of our first amendment rights and his lyrics often made known his skeptical views of US politics. He died of prostate cancer. Frank was 52.

Frank Zappa is one of those big names that was so important to the music industry that I feel unqualified to even talk about him, so I am going to ask a friend of mine if he would write something up here about Frank.

Michael Clarke (Michael James Dick) 6/3/46 -12/19/93. Born in Spokane, Washington, Michael was best known as the drummer for the 1960s rock music group The Byrds from 1964 to 1968. He also played with the Flying Burrito Brothers. Michael died of liver failure thought to be a result of more than three decades of heavy alcohol consumption. He was 47.

I found this very interesting, "In legend, Clarke was said to have been discovered by Byrds founder David Crosby while playing bongos on the beach, but in fact he was discovered by singer-songwriter Ivan Ulz. And, he was not discovered on the beach per se, but in San Francisco's North Beach. Clarke was not an accomplished musician prior to joining the Byrds. He was reportedly hired more for his resemblance to Rolling Stones guitarist Brian Jones than his percussion skills." Michael must have improved on his skills as time went on since he was with two really great bands. Another sad loss due to alcoholism.

Kurt Cobain, 2/20/67 – 4/5/94. Born in Hoquiam/ Seattle, Washington, Kurt was the lead singer and guitarist for Nirvana. As their music became more mainstream and popular Kurt was dubbed the “spokesman for Generation X”. Its said that he did'nt like the attention on himself. He began using drugs and making poor choices in his life. His death was officially ruled suicide by self-inflicted gunshot wound, but to this day some people believe there was foul play involved. Kurt was the fight member of the “27 Club”.

Admittedly I was not a huge Nirvana fan at the time of Kurt's death. Of course I knew who he was, he'd become a superstar (which many say contributed to his depression). When he died I could feel the loss through others, by watching how grieved they were. It reminded me of a bit of when John Lennon died, an entire generation mourned together, we could not believe he was gone. Same with Kurt, but the added tragedy that he took his own life. I do appreciate Nirvana's music now that I've given it more of a chance. If you want a better understanding of who Kurt was, I highly recommend the documentary film, "About a Son". Here's a clip.

Rory Gallagher, 3/2/48 - 6/14/95. Rory was born in County Donegal, but grew up in Cork City in the south of Ireland. He is best known for his incredible talent at guitar and most often played a 1961 Stratocaster. Rory excessively used drugs and alcoholl which necessitated a liver transplant; complications from that caused his death. He was 43.

I once wrote about Rory on my other blog and it generated quite a few comments saying that he was underrated. Its true he was not a big name like some of the guitar greats but as far as talent he was up there with the best. One person said it like this "It is great to see Rory here. He was fantastic playing that battered Stratocaster straight into an amp. Today's young guitarists could learn a thing from him. He is missed." I agree! (p.s. I am proud to say I have relatives in Donegal!)

Jerry Garcia, (Jerome John Garcia), 8/1/42 – 8/9/95. Born in San Fransisco, California, Jerry was thought of as the lead vocalist and guitarist for The Grateful Dead – although he insisted the band had no official leader. He played guitar, piano and banjo. He died of a heart attack. He was 53.

Another legend that I dare not write about for fear of not saying enough. I have someone in mind to write this one, hope he is willing, he's a great writer and loyal Deadhead.

Shannon Hoon, (Richard Shannon Hoon), 9/26/67 – 10/21/95. Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, Shannon was the lead singer for Blind Melon and worked with Guns N Roses. He developed a cocaine habit and often joked that he would be the next member of the “27 Club”. He died of an accidental heroin/cocaine overdoes three weeks after his birthday. Shannon was 28.

There was something very special and unique about Shannon Hoon. They say a picture says a thousand words, so I guess a video can convey a personality. This performance at Woodstock '94 will tell you a lot more about Shannon than I can. Shannon was known for doing crazy (and often illegal) things, for example he was arrested in Vancouver after getting naked and urinating on someone in the audience. Another time he walked on stage smoking a joint. His drug and alcohol use were a huge problem for the band, he was in and out of rehab. Looking at him I see such a beautiful face, a great voice, a bright future with a hugely successful band; but the drugs won.

Bradley James Nowell, 2/22/68 - 5/25/96. Born in Long Beach, California Bradley was the lead singer and guitarist for Sublime. He had musical talent from a young age and was known to be able to play a song on guitar after hearing it only once. Shortly before their first album on their own record label came out, Bradley died of a heroin overdose. He was 28.

As I was sitting here thinking of what to say about Brad my Last FM station starts playing "Seeds" by Sublime. Eerie. His is another story of a young man that got caught in the vicious grasp of heroin and never made it out. He didn't live to see the success of that last album which was ironically first going to be titled "Killin' It" but was changed to "Sublime" after his death.

Ella Fitzgerald, 4/25/17 - 6/15/96. Born in Newport News, Virginia Ella was known as one of the most influential jazz vocalists of all time. Her voice spanned three octaves and she had the ability to improvise and do "scat singing". Her career spanned 57 years. Ella died of natural causes in her home. She was 79.

Ella's voice is legendary. She inspired so many vocalists that followed in her footsteps. I am glad that she lived a long life and died peacefully. Here is a video clip of the "First Lady of Song" doing some of her famous scat singing, I dare you to watch it without smiling.

Jonathan Melvoin, 12/6/61 – 7/11/96. Born in Los Angeles, California Jonathan was the keyboardist for Prince, The Dickies and The Smashing Pumpkins. He had been fired from Smashing Pumpkins for drug use and died from an overdose of heroin while with their drummer, who was then let go from the band as well. Jonathan was 34.

Damn it to hell, another one! It pains me to write about another heroin overdose. Each time I see those words I feel a sense of loss, fear and anger. I can imagine that Jonathan was a special guy because his death inspired at least three songs to be written including Sarah McLachlan's hit single "Angel" (lyrics here), the Wendy & Lisa song "Jonathan" and Prince's "The Love We Make". When I hear of a band kicking out a member due to their drug use, I understand. One thing to understand about addicts is that if often takes "hitting bottom" before they will choose to get help. Many parents have to kick their children out onto the street in hopes that they will clean up vs. die. I guess for Jonathan it wasn't enough, or it was too late. Its horribly tragic.

Eva Cassidy, 2/2/63 – 11/2/96. Born near Bowie, Maryland Eva started singing at the age of eleven. She was known for her exceptional voice and sadly due mostly to logistical issues (record companies going out of business, etc.) her career did not take off until after her death. She died of melanoma. Eva was 33.

A friend of Eva's wrote to me to be sure I included her here, I am grateful for that. I was really touched reading a bit about her. Its a shame that she gained the most recognition after her death when a compilation of her recordings was released. Melnoma is a serious and frightening form of cancer. Here is something I read about her last performance that brought a tear to my eye, "In her final public performance in September 1996, at the Bayou, she closed the set with "What a Wonderful World" in front of an audience of friends, fans and family." She died only two months later.

Brian Francis Connolly, 11/17/45 - 5/29/97. Born in Hamilton, Scotland, Brian was a rock vocalist, best known as the lead singer for the glam rock band, Sweet. He died as a result of liver failure brought on by a drinking problem. Brian was 51.

Brian's life seemed to have quite a bit of drama right from the start. It seems that his drinking started during the success of Sweet and never stopped.

Jeff Buckley, (Jeffrey Scott Buckley), 11/17/66 – 5/29/97, born in Anaheim, California Jeff was an incredibly talented musician, vocalist and song-writer. His father was musician Tim Buckely. He drowned in the Mississippi River, his death was an accident. He was 30.

Its hard to write about Jeff because I discovered his music years after he died and immediately felt a loss. I’ve read a lot about him and can’t do justice to him here in a few words. Jeff struggled with his emotional highs and lows but I believe that’s what enabled him to write in his intense, ethereal lyrics. Sometimes when I listen to him sing, its hurts, he has that effect on me. I have the 2009 release of a DVD/CD "Grace Around the World" and highly recommend it. I reviewed it here. There's something so intriguing about him, a darkness, a sadness that seems out of place coming from such beautiful young man, see if you agree by watching him perform "Grace" here. A great loss.

Rich Mullins, 10/21/55 – 9/19/97. Born in Richmond, Indiana, Rich was very much loved singer/songwriter. He wrote several songs that became some of the best known “praise and worship songs” used in churches today (Sing Your Praise To The Lord and Our God Is An Awesome God ). Rich died as the result of a car accident. Rich was 41.

Rich may not be familiar to many of you unless you listen to contemporary Christian music. What I liked about him was that he "walked the talk" and chose to live a simple lifestyle giving most of him money away. One of his songs seems very prophetic to me since he talks about dying and even insinuates that he's looking forward to it. Here are the lyrics.

John Denver, ( Henry John Deutschendorf Jr. ), 12/31/43 – 10/12/97. Born in Roswell, New Mexico, John was one of the biggest selling folk/pop artists of the 1970s. In his lifetime, he recorded and released over 300 songs, about half of which he had written. John died when the small aircraft he was piloting crashed. He was 53.

What sad news to hear about John's death. I think most people remember him in his early years when he had a "down-home-country boy" persona, a "nice young man" that wrote uplifting songs. John was also very involved in several humanitarian projects and was vocal about his political beliefs. Unfortunately some people thought that tarnished his image, it made me respect him more. I wonder what he'd be up to today had he lived a longer life.

Michael Hutchence, (Michael Kelland John Hutchence), 1/22/60 – 11/22/97. Born in Sydney, Australia, Michael was the lead singer of INXS. He was found hanging in his hotel room. Controversy surrounded his death with rumors that it was murder, but it was considered to be a suicide. Michael was 37.

Its been over ten years but I still feel an ache in my heart every time I listen to his voice. Michael was one of my top five favorite male vocalists of all time. I wad devastated at this loss. I had the honor of meeting someone who knew him and was close to his family. After his death this person was allowed to read Michael’s journals and it confirmed what I had always believed, he was a sensitive soul often tortured by depression. Bono and he were friends and the song “Stuck in a Moment” was written about his death. This video of INXS doing "Don't Change" is a chronological look at Michael on stage. I think he's one of the most sensually attractive men I have ever seen. I was appalled when a few years ago the remaining members of the show did a reality to show to find a new vocalist. Let's face it - Michael made INXS the success it was. It was his songwriting ability and his presence on that stage that brought the fans. I'm not saying the rest of the band had no talent, just saying they could have been replaced but there was no replacing Michael.

Tim Kelly, 1/16/63 – 2/5/98. Born in Trenton, New Jersey, Tim was the guitarist for Slaughter. He was self taught at guitar and has his first band in the sixth grade. Tim died from head injuries after an automobile accident. He was 35.

From what I've read about Tim, he seemed like a really nice guy. He also knew the heartache of losing a loved one (his sister) to cancer and wrote a song for her. It seems wrong that the persona responsible for his death only received three years in prison (he was driving an 18 wheeler under the influence of several drugs and crashed into Tim).

Carl Wilson, (Carl Dean Wilson), 12/21/46 – 2/6/98. Born in Hawthorne, California Carl was a singer and lead guitarist for The Beach Boys. Carl was the youngest of the Wilson brothers. He died of lung cancer. Carl was 51.

Carl seemed to be talked about less then his Beach Boy brother's, Brian and Dennis. Here is a very touching account about the end of Carl's career, "Wilson was diagnosed with brain and lung cancer in early 1997. Despite his illness and chemotherapy treatments, Carl continued to perform after diagnosis. Carl played through the Beach Boys' entire summer tour which ended in the fall of 1997. He sat down most of the time and needed oxygen after every song, but he still had his unique voice. The only time he stood during concerts was when he sang "God Only Knows" to his fans."

Falco (Johann Hölze) 2/16/57 - 2/6/98. Born in Vienna, Austria, Falco was a rap, pop and rock musicians with four #1 hits. Falco died from injuries sustained in a collisions with a bus. He was 40.

Okay, who has not at one time or another caught themselves singing along to the chorus of "Rock Me Amadeus"? Its an unusual but catchy tune and was also the only German language song to become a number one hit in the U.S. Sad ending to his life.

Cozy Powell, (Colin Flooks) 12/29/47 - 4/5/98. Born in Gloucester, England. He began playing drums at age 12 and worked with many bands over the years including Rainbow, Black Sabbath, The Jeff Beck Group and Whitesnake. Cozy died in a single car crash while driving under the influence of alcohol. He was 50.

Cozy was an incredible drummer! See for yourself here. He played with some very impressive bands. I read that Led Zeppelin considered asking him to join the band when John Bonham died. I am glad they chose to disband, it was the right thing to do, no one could replace Bonzo, but Cozy was a damn good choice if they chose to continue. Another tragic loss that could have been avoided.

Wendy O Williams, (Wendy Orleans Williams) 5/28/49 – 4/6/98. Born in Webster, New York, Wendy was the lead singer and guitarist for The Plasmatics. She was known for her shocking stage performances which often included blowing up equipment and chain-sawing guitars. She ended her own life by shooting herself. Wendy was 48.

Another depression ending in suicide. After reading a portion of her suicide note it seems that she made the decision after a lot of thought. In contrast to the punk rock persona she had, Wendy had a much softer side, "Despite her reputation as a fearsome performer, Williams in her personal life was deeply devoted to the welfare of animals, a passion that included a vegetarian diet, working as a wildlife rehabilitator and being a natural foods activist. "

Carl Perkins, 4/9/32 – 1/19/98. Born in Tiptonville, Tennessee Carl was a pioneer in rockabilly music. He influenced many musicians who went on to have successful careers including Elvis, Johnny Cash and The Beatles. Carl died of cancer. He was 65.

According to Charlie Daniels, "Carl Perkins' songs personified the rockabilly era, and Carl Perkins' sound personifies the rockabilly sound more so than anybody involved in it, because he never changed." Many artists have covered his songs. He is most famous for the classic "Blue Suede Shoes".

John Panozzo, 9/20/48 – 7/16/98. John was born in Chicago, Illinois, he was the drummer and a founding member of Styx. Years of partying with excessive drinking began to take a toll on his liver eventually dying of gastrointestinal hemorrhaging. He was 47.

I enjoyed reading about John's early start in music. He and his twin brother, Chuck, both picked up instruments at age seven. Then they hooked up with their neighbor, Dennis de Young, and the beginnings of Styx was formed. Unfortunately partying got in the way and ruined his health. "The band dedicated their 1996 Return to Paradise tour to him, and Tommy Shaw, who had earlier replaced Curulewski, wrote the song "Dear John" as the band's final tribute to their drummer and friend."

Dusty Springfield, (Mary Isabel Catherine Bernadette O'Brien) 4/16/39 – 3/2/99. Born in London, England she grew up loving American jazz singers and recorded her first song at age 11. She never wrote her own music but was considered a superstar with her success as a “blue-eyed soul” vocalist. Dusty died of breast cancer. She was 59.

Dusty was an amazing woman. She started out young and had a determination even when obstacles got in her way. Dusty went through a time of being out of the spotlight but then her career picked up again. She fought the breast cancer and was in remission for awhile but that damn disease won the battle. She was one classy lady with a smooth, sexy voice. You can hear her here.

Bobby Sheehan, (Robert Vaughan Sheehan) 6/12/68 - 8/20/99. Born in Summit, New Jersey he was a founding member and the original bass player for Blues Traveler. Bobby was found dead in his apartment of a drug overdose - once again heroin and cocaine. He was 33.

There was very little on Wikipedia about Bobby but fortunately there is a fan page dedicated to his memory. Here is a quote from that page, "It is with heavy hearts and tearful eyes that we announce the passing of one of the most genuine people to ever grace the music industry with his presence. Ironically, it was his presence that made us all feel like the party would never end. Brooklyn Bobby Sheehan's original sound was the backbone of what is known as Blues Traveler. The only way to describe his music is the groove. When he got into that groove, there was nobody better. His amazing solos in Mother Funker and Alone proved that he can provide any sort of emotion with his music. "

Rick Danko, (Richard Clare Danko) 12/29/42 – 12/10/99. Born in Ontario, Canada, Rick was best known for playing bass and singing guitar with The Band, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Neil Young and others. Rick was had a heart condition that ended his life. Rick was 56.

Another fabulous musician from the Great White North. I love the story of The Band and have always thought they were one of the most talented group or artists to stand on stage together. Does anyone else cry when watching The Last Waltz? I do for some reason. Rick picked up a banjo when he was in first grade and by age 14 had left school to pursue music full time. He met Ronnie Hawkins and things took off from there. Rick didn't let the break-up of The Band keep him from pursuing his career in music. He endured several hardships (the loss of his son, a very serious car accident, etc.) but he kept moving forward until his heard gave out. He died in his sleep.

Paul Young – 6/17/47 – 7/15/00. Born in Manchester England, Paul was best known as the singer for Sad Café and Mike and The Mechanics. He was sometimes confused with another Paul Young because they both sang “blue-eyed-soul”. Paul died of a heart attack. He was 53.

One of my favorite songs is by Mike and the Mechanics but I can't figure out if Mike or Paul sang it...I was unable to find much about him but what I read made me believe he was a family man, musician and nice guy. His son, Jason, has a tribute site for him here.

Allen Woody, (Douglass Allen Woody) 10/3/55 - 8/26/00. Born in Nashville, Tennessee Allen joined The Allman Brothers in 1989 as bass player. for many years and was also the bass player for Gov't. Mule. He was respected as a bass player and a collection of over 450 bass guitars. His death is rumored to be a heroin overdose. He was 44.

Allen was good friends with Warren Haynes, they started G-Mule together. After Allen died, Warren chose to go back to The Allman Brother's. There was a special limited edition bass released by Epiphone called the Allen Woody Rumble Kat, too bad he was not around to add it to his collection. Heroin takes another life and cuts it short.

Benjamin Orr, (Benjamin Bogdonavich Orzechowski) 8/9/47 – 10/3/00. Benjamin was the bass guitar player and one of the vocalists for the The Cars. He sang several of The Cars greatest hits, including "Just What I Needed", "Let's Go" and "Drive". In April 2000, he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He fought but lost the battle only 6 months later. His final public appearance was on September 27 only six days before he died. Ben was 53.

Ben Orr! My favorite "Car". From what I have read over the years he was also a really nice guy. I love his voice and though many people can't tell him and Ric Ocasek apart I think Ben's is smoother and deeper. I was so sad to hear of his death. The fact that he performed right up to his final days says a lot about his passion for music. He is missed.

John Phillips, (John Edmund Andrew Phillips) 8/30/45 - 3/18-01. Born in Paris Island, South Carolina, John was an American singer, guitarist, and songwriter known as Papa John of the Mama's and the Papa's. He also sang and played guitar with the Journeyman. John suffered from alcoholism and had a liver transplant in the 90's. He died of heart failure at the age of 65.

The Mama's and the Papa's filled the airwaves when I was a kid listening to AM radio. I loved this song that John wrote, San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair". I started to learn guitar when I was 12 and this was one of the first songs I tired to learn. His personal life reads a lot like a soap opera but he will (hopefully) be remembered for the many great songs he wrote.

Joey Ramone, (Jeffrey Hyman) 5/19/51 – 4/15/01. Born in Forest Hills, New York, Joey was the lead singer and a founding member of The Ramones. He co-produced for the band was a catalyst in getting the punk rock movement started. Joey died of Lymphoma cancer. He was 49.

The Ramones. They were more than a band, they were a movement and Joey's "image, voice and tenure as frontman of the Ramones made him a countercultural icon." How many times have you heard one of the great musicians of our time cite The Ramones as one of their main influences? There was something special about Joey - he did a lot in his lifetime and is sadly missed. (BTW, its commonly thought that the many members of this band were brothers....no, they all adopted the last name "Ramone" to be in the band. Does anyone know how many members they had in total over the years?)

George Harrison, (George Harold Harrison) 2/24/43 – 11/29/01. Born in Liverpool, England he was a guitarist, singer/songwriter. Best known for being one of The Beatles, George went on to have a successful solo career and also formed member of the The Traveling Wilburys with Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison and Jeff Lynne. He died of lung cancer. George was 58.

My sister is the one who told me George had passed away, she was crying. I have fond memories of him dating back to my earliest childhood years. George was one of the first musicians to use his fame to bring attention to the poverty and starvation in a third world country, I still have my vinyl copy of "The Concert for Bangla Desh". So many excellent songs written by George. I am glad that he was able to have such a long and succesful career as a solo artist, we may not have been fortunate enough to have all his great music if they had stayed together.

Dave Van Ronk, 6/30/36 - 2/10/02. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Dave was a well known singer/songwriter and guitarist and personality in the early folk scene in New York. Although he wrote few of his own songs he was re-wrote songs by others such as of Bob Dylan, Tom Paxton, Patrick Sky, Phil Ochs and Joni Mitchell. Dave died of heart failure after a surgery for colon-cancer. He was 65.

I am not familiar with Dave or his music, I hope someone that knows a bit about him can add there thoughts in the comments. I'll share a quote here, "Van Ronk has been described as an irreverent and incomparable guitar artist and interpreter of black blues and folk, with an uncannily precise ability at improvisation. Joni Mitchell often said that his rendition of her song Both Sides Now (which he called Clouds) was the finest ever."

Mick Tucker, (Michael Thomas Tucker) 7/17/49 – 2/14/02. Born in London, England Mick was a member of several glam rock bands, best known for being the drummer of Sweet. He died of Leukemia. Mick was 55.

Sweet bandmate and friend, Steve Priest, said that Mick was the best drummer London ever produced. He added that even though Mick had been diagnosed five years earlier, his death was still a surprise because they believed he was in remission after a bone marrow transplant from his brother. Its a reminder - sometimes our blood, or our bone marrow, can save a life. I am sorry we had to lose Mick. He's gone, but like the others here, not forgotten, especially by his family and friends.

Layne Staley, 8/22/67 – 4/05/02. Born in Kirkland, Washington, Layne began playing drums at the age of twelve. He was in several glam bands in his early teens, but aspired to be a singer. In 1987 he became the singer for Alice in Chains died of a heroin/cocaine overdose. Layne was 34.

Tears. I know a lot of fans cried when Layne's death was announced. As I type this I am listening to U2 singing about how we are all One, we need to carry each other, we need to love each other. I don't know what that has to do with Layne Staley but I felt compelled to share it then opened Wiki to read more about Layne. Here is what he said about his parent's divorce (he was 7 years old when they split) "My world became a nightmare, there were just shadows around me. I got a call saying that my dad had died, but my family always knew he was around doing all kind of drugs. Since that call I always was wondering, 'Where is my dad?' I felt so sad for him and I missed him. He dropped out of my life for 15 years."In that same interview he also said that he was convinced that if he became a celebrity his dad would return." Another victim of drug abuse/addiction. Like father like son? Layne, so sorry you missed your dad so much, I know what that can do to a boy, knowing his father is out there but doesn't give a shit about him, I see it when I look into my son's eyes. Dee Dee Ramone, (Douglas Glenn Colvin), 9/18/52 – 6/5/02. Born in Fort Lee, Virginia, Dee Dee was a bassist, singer/songwriter for The Ramones. He also wrote two books, “Chelsea Horror Hotel” and “Lobotomy: Surviving The Ramones”. Dee died of an accidental heroin overdose. He was 50.

Robbin Crosby, (Robbinson Lance Crosby), 8/4/60 – 6/6/02. Born in La Jolla, California Robbin was co-lead guitarist along with Warren diMartini for the glam rock band Ratt. Robbin contacted AIDS and died of a heart attack that was associated with the disease. He was 42.

Okay, this one hurts. I met Robbin years ago up in LA (The Whiskey or The Wiltern? can't remember for sure) when RATT was just getting a name for themselves. He was so tall, so handsome, so sweet....seriously, he was a nice guy and he seemed almost shy to me. It was before the fame, glamor and heroin. So even though Ratt never impressed me musically I closely watched Robbin because of that night when we shared a few drinks, a bit of conversation and a kiss. Damn. His story is a sad one. I don't even want to talk about it. Here is a quote from Robbin, it comforts me, "When I die, nobody cry at my funeral, in fact let's all have a party; I've lived the life of ten men. I lived all my dreams and more". Sorry, Robbin, I didn't go to the funeral but I cried.

John Entwistle, (John Alec Entwistle), 10/9/44 – 6/27/02. John was born in London, England and is best known for being The Who’s bassist. He also worked with several other bands over the years including Ringo Starr, Govt. Mule and The Faces. John died of a cocaine induced heart attack. He was 58.

John was a great bass player and a-typical for that role in a band, he didn't like to stand in the background and go unnoticed, who can forget his skeleton outfit? It was sad when The Who replaced Keith but the band was still young and wanted to continue. I was a bit disappointed at how easily and quickly they replaced John. Once again drugs ruled the day and cause the death of a talented music. He lived a lot longer than many of his colleagues.

Michael "Mikey" Hauser, 1/6/62 - 8/10/2. Mikey was born in Boone, North Carolina and was a founding member and guitarist for Widespread Panic. He was considered to be a "silent genius" and wrote many of the songs biggest hits. Mikey was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the spring of 2002 and died only months later. He was 40.

I learned several interesting facts about Mikey just now: Panic" was his nickname for years because of panic attacks - and that's how the band chose their name. "Mike taught himself to play the guitar while sitting on the arm of a couch. At the first Widespread Panic show, he played an acoustic guitar while sitting on a small metal chair with his right foot on the volume pedal. Many consider him a master of the volume pedal for his skilled incorporation of its use in conjunction with the other members of Panic." He sounds like a special person, sad that he died so young. RIP, Mikey.

Joe Strummer, (John Graham Mellor), 8/21/52 -12/22/02. Born in Ankara, Turkey Joe was a co-founder, lead singer and guitarist for The Clash. He was loved by many and also dedicated a lot of time to environmental causes. He died of a congenital heart defect. Joe was 50.

"He was loved by many". I am tempted to leave it at that because it says so much. I remember watching this tribute to him and bawling my eyes out. You can see it in their faces, especailly in Bruce's eyes. It hurts to lose the really great ones...the ones that were passionate, courageous and never compromised.

Maurice Gibb, 12/22/49 – 1/12/03. Born in Douglas, England, Maurice was a member of the singing trio, The Bee Gees along with his twin brother Robin and older brother Barry. He played the bass and piano. Maurice died of complications resulting from a twisted intestine. He was 53.

I remember watching a show with Barry and Robin after they lost their brother, it was difficult to see them so choked up and grieving. Maurice's death was unexpected, which always seems to be much harder for those left behind.

June Carter Cash (Valerie June Carter Cash) 6/23/29 - 5/15/03. June was a singer, songwriter, actress and author. She was married to Johnny Cash for 35 years (he died 4 months after her). June died after complications from a heart valve replacement surgery. She was 73.

June was a beautiful woman with an intersting life. She was a multi-talented musician, she played She played the guitar, banjo, harmonica, and autoharp. Her relationship with Johnny was long and tumultuous at times but I think it was one of those deep, intense loves and its interesting that he died so soon after she did.

Warren William Zevon, 1/24/47 – 9/7/03. Born in Chicago, Illinois, Warren was a singer/songwriter known for his rather dark brand of folk songs. The list of peers that he worked with over the years includes some of the biggest names in rock music including Bruce Springsteen, David Gilmore, Linda Ronstadt and Jerry Garcia. He died of Mesothelioma, a form of cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. Warren was 56.

Warren had a few big hits. He had a unique style and was a good storyteller. He overcame a serious drinking problem, a major accomplished, but then unfortunately he was diagnosed with cancer. I love his voice, his speaking and singing voice. You can hear an example of both here along with one of his quirky songs.

Johnny Cash, (born J. R. Cash; 2/26/32 - 9/12/03. Born in Kingsland, Arkansas, Johnny was one of the most influential American musicians of the 20th century. He was known for his deep voice, his story-telling songs and interesting personal life, including time spent in prison. He often performed for prisoners and was loved by many. Johnny died of complications of diabetes four months after the death of his beloved wife, June. He was 71.

I hesitate to say much about Johnny because its seems overwhelming to try to put into words all that Johnny was to music and to our era. He was the "man in black" but hung out with all the presidents in the White House. He spent time in prison as both an inmate and an entertainer. He overcame addiction and heart disease. His music doesn't seem to fit a genre, it was rockabilly-punk-country-rock-alternative-blues. He collaborated with way too many bands to name here. He also had an acting career and wrote a novel. One of my friends left a comment that says a lot: " Johnny Cash was punk rock before there was such a thing as punk rock".

Robert Palmer, (Alan Palmer) 1/19/49 – 9/26/03. Born in Bately, England, Robert was a singer/songwriter and guitarist. He led the group “The Power Station”. He was best known for his hit song “Addicted to Love” and his soulful vocals. Robert died of a heart attack. He was 54.

I was sitting in front of my computer when I got one of those "breaking news" emails saying that Robert had died, it was hard news to take in. I had all Robert's music and love his voice. He was one classy guy that also had a sense of fun about him. Most of us remember those provocative videos with all the beautiful (but emotionless) women, they were a huge hit on MTV. He died suddenly and is missed.

Elliott Smith, (Steven Paul Smith) 8/6/69 – 10/21/03. Born in Omaha, Nebraska, Elliot is remembered for being a talented singer/songwriter who played multiple instruments. His song “Miss Misery” was nominated for an Academy Award, it was written for the movie “Good Will Hunting”. Elliott suffered from depression, drug addiction and alcoholism and died in an apparent suicide (2 stab wounds to chest). He was 34.

Ellitot's story is very sad. Apparently he thought about killing himself for years, even tried once by jumping off a cliff, and openly talked about his plans to end his own life. I think its a case where depression came before drug addiction and the drugs were used as an attempt to kill the pain of depression. Such a talented man, successful, handsome. But depression, or addiction for that matter, attacks all sorts of people it doens't play favorites or choose only the "down and out". Here is a quote form the head of his record label, Christopher Cooper, "I talked him out of thinking that he wanted to kill himself numerous times when he was in Portland. I kept telling him that he was a brilliant man, and that life was worth living, and that people loved him."

Ray Charles, (Ray Charles Robinson), 9/23/23 – 6/10/04. Born in Albany, Georgia, Ray Charles was a singer, bandleader and pianist known for bringing rhythm and blues into the mainstream. He died of liver cancer. Ray was 73.

Ray Charles is one of those names everyone knows. His career was long and legendary. He had the music in him and let nothing - including the loss of his site as a young boy - get in his way. Here is a video of him performing once of his best known songs.

Rick James, (James Johnson Jr.), 2/1/48 – 8/6/04. Born in Buffalo, New York, Rick was known as the “King of Punk Funk”. He had a controversial lifestyle and is often remembered for his hit song “Super Freak”. Rick died of “natural causes” but many illegal drugs were found in his system at his time of death. He was 56.

Rick's career was sometimes overshadowed by his personal life which included illegal activity, drug abuse and prison time. He admitted to having a $7,000 a week crack cocaine habit at one point. Not sure what else to say.

Laura Branigan, 7/3/57 – 8/26/04. Born in Brewster, New York, Laura had a career as a singer with working with musicians such as Leonard Cohen. She portrayed Janis Joplin in the musical, Love, Janis. Laura died of a brain aneurysm. She was 47.

A beautiful woman with a beautiful voice. She was also an actress who appeared on several TV shows and movies. I don't know much about her but do remember her song "Gloria". I read that she was having headaches prior to her death - a symptom most of us ignore. Very sad she died so suddenly.

Johnny Ramone, (John Cummings), 10/8/48 – 9/15/04. Born in Long Island, New York, Johnny was a founding member and guitarist for The Ramones. He died of prostate cancer. Johnny was 55.

Johnny had a reputation for being an excellent rhythm guitar player but also is credited for "initiating one of the major sources of stress for the band when he started dating Hyman's (Joey Ramone's) ex-girlfriend, whom he later married." He and Joey both died of cancer. Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam) wrote a song about Johnny while driving home from his funeral, its called "Life Wasted". Eddie considered Johnny to be his best friend.

"Dimebag Darrell" (Darrel Lance Abbot), 8/ /66 – 12/8/04. Born in Arlington, Texas Darrel was best known as the lead guitar player for heavy metal band Pantera. He was shot and killed onstage while performing with. He was 38.

This has to be one of the most shocking deaths in all of rock and roll history. Not only was Darrel shot and killed but three other people (trying to help him ) were also killed by the gunman (who was justifiably shot when the cops arrived). I saw a reenactment of this horrific scene on a tv show and two things stood out to me, that the shooter was absolutely ruthless and was there to kill not only Darrel, but anyone else that got in the way and that others risked their lives to help Darrel and died along with him, that is so brave and honorable. It said that Darrel was loved for his great rapport with his fans and known for his unique "groove metal" guitar style. I can't imagine what the people in the audience went through that night and continue to go through seeing someone shot down in front of their eyes. A very tragic death.

Keith Knudsen, 2/18/48 – 2/8/05. Born in LeMars, Iowa, Keith was the drummer for The Doobie Brothers. He and Doobie, John McFee, formed a country band called Southern Pacific. Keith lost his life to a chronic case of pneumonia. He was 57.

The Doobies are such a fun band to listen to. I saw them once and don't remember if Keith was the drummer at that show or not. It sounds as though he was a very nice person. I hope someone out there can add more about him.

Rod Price, 11/22/47 – 3/22/05. Born in North London, England, Rod was the lead guitarist for Foghat. He had the nickname of “Slide King of Rock and Roll” for his expertise at slide guitar. Rod died as a result of a head trauma received by a fall precipitated by a heart attack. He was 58.

Foghat was a hot band in the 0's with some great songs that I still love today. I got to see them perform at an ice-skating rink in Beaverton, Oregon in 1979 and got to meet the band afterwards. Rod was super nice and friendly. He left, and returned, to live performing several times and also taught others to play at workshops and seminars.

Paul Hester, 1/8/59 - 3/26/05. Born in Melbourne, Australia, Paul was the drummer for several bands including Spit Enz and Crowded House. He also had a successful career in television, radio and as a restaurant owner. He ended his life by hanging himself in a tree near his home. Paul was 46.

Its sad. He would appear to have everything going for him but depression is something that can affect anyone. RIP, Paul.

Syd was active as a rock musician for only a few years, before he went into seclusion. He left his influential mark progressive rock. Syd died of complications of diabetes. He was 60.

He was most widely known as a founding member of the 1960s musical group The Mamas & the Papas. Dennis died of kidney failure resulting from an abdominal aneurysm. He was 66.

Billy Thorpe, (William Richard Thorpe), 3/29/46 – 2/28/07. Born in Manchester, England Billy was an English-born Australian musician. He had a successful career as a pop idol in the 60’s and led the hard rock group Billy Thorpe & the Aztecs in the 70’s. He died after suffering a heart attack. He was 60.

A friend made me aware of Billy and his interesting foray through several genres of music. This quote says a lot about him, " he authored two autobiographies, "Sex and Thugs and Rock 'n' Roll" and "Most People I Know (Think That I'm Crazy)".According to Australian rock music historian, Ian McFarlane, "Thorpie evolved from child star, beat pop sensation and cuddly pop crooner to finally emerge as the country's wildest and heaviest blues rocker."

Bradley E. Delp, 6/12/51 – 3/9/07. Born in Danvers, Massachusetts, Brad was the lead vocalist for the band Boston. He is remembered not only for his "golden voice” but, as the band put it "one of the nicest guys in rock and roll”. Brad committed suicide. He was 55.

This is another one that hit hard. I remember hearing he had died and hoping that it was natural causes but for some reason had a sick feeling in my stomach and, unfortunately, my gut reaction was correct. Hearing Boston is like reliving some of the happiest most carefree times of my life. Brad's voice was so perfect, so easy to listen to. This may sound odd, but I felt a certain kinship with him since we both had Canadian fathers and both of us saw The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show, and because I had, so often in my life, entertained similar thoughts of suicide. His death was tragic, and the note he left hurts to read, "Mr. Brad Delp. Je suis une âme solitaire. (French Portion Translates As "I Have A Solitary Heart") I am a lonely soul." It must have been excruciating for his fiance to find him, so close to their wedding. He must have been hurting so much to end his life like that. I understand but I still hate to see it happen knowing how it tears apart those left behind.

Kevin DuBrow, 10/29/55 – 11/25/07. Born in Hollywood, Califorina, Kevin grew up in the California music scene of the 80’s. He was the lead singer of heavy metal band Quiet Riot and known for his “on-stage charisma, gravelly bluesy voice". Kevin’s death was a result of a cocaine overdose. He was 52.

Kevin was a flashy frontman with a great rockers voice that added so much to Quiet Riot. I remember him from the LA 80's scene but instead of being another "hair band" they went on to be a huge success. What is so damn sad is that his body was not discovered for six days after his death. SIX days? No one missed him, no one checked on him? From what I've read he was a very mellow guy who spent his free time cooking and shopping. Not quite the image you get from his QR days. Here is what a waitress at one of the restaurants he frequented said, I think it says so much about him, "Kevin wasn't one of those flashy guys," said Susan Emmett, general manager of the Villa Nova restaurant in Newport Beach. "Sometimes celebrities are so high-maintenance, but Kevin was so unpretentious, warm and friendly." Another drug related death, and we will never know for sure if it was an accident or not, either way he is gone, but not forgotten.

Ike Wister Turner, 11/5/08 – 12/12/07. Ike was born in Clarksdale, Mississippi. He’s best known for discovering the talent of his former wife, Tina Turner. Ike was also a musician, bandleader, talent scout and producer. He died of a cocaine overdose. Ike was 76.

Ike had a reputation for many things and is considered by some to be one of the "fathers of rock and roll" for his work in the early 1950's. I like to think of his greatest contribution to the music world is bringing Tina Turner to us - but if he had not discovered her someone else would have. When he died I initially left him off this list because like many, I recalled the negatives about him. That was completely unfair of me, we all have negatives and I am in no place to judge anyone else. That said - I still think he was a jerk for the way he treated her.

Dan Fogelberg, 8/13/51 - 12/16/07. Born in Peoria, Illinois Dan was a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. His music was inspired by folk, pop, classical, jazz, and bluegrass music. He lost his battle with prostate cancer peacefully at home. He was 56.

My sister came home from Jr. High one day and told me that her teacher had played "There's A Place in the World for a Gambler" for the class, she's been a fan ever since. His music reflected the kind of person he was and reflected his views on environmental issues, world peace and human rights. Just days before he died I was having dinner with a friend who knew him and got to hear some great stories that confirmed Dan was exactly how he appeared, a kind, gentle person.

Jeff Healey, 3/25/66 – 3/3/08. Born in Ontario, Canada, Jeff was known as a virtuoso musician playing guitar, trumpet and clarinet in the genre of "classic rock jazz". Jeff battled cancer off and on his entire life losing his eyes to a rare form of it when he was only a baby. He lost the battle but leaving behind a legacy of music and inspiration. He was 41.

An amazing musician who did not let blindness or cancer stop him from having a long and successful career as a musician. He learned how to play the guitar when he was only three, and played it in his own way - on his lap. He formed his first band when he was 17. He won many awards and "Over the years, Healey toured and sat-in with many legendary performers, including, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Buddy Guy, BB King, ZZ Top, Steve Lukather, Eric Clapton and many more. In 2006, Healey appeared on Deep Purple vocalist Ian Gillan's CD/DVD Gillan's Inn."

Buddy Miles, (George Allen Miles) 9/5/47 - 2/26/08. Buddy was born in Omaha, Nebraska and was known as a child prodigy, he began playing drums at age 12 in his father's jazz band. Buddy played for Jimi Hendrix between 1969 - 1970 and went on to have a successful solo career. He died of congestive heart failure. Buddy was 60.

Buddy was nicknamed "Buddy" after Buddy Rich and went on to live up to the name. "Known as an inspiration to Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and many other guitarists, Guy is considered an important exponent of Chicago blues. He is the father of female rapper Shawnna and also has a son, Michael. He is the older brother of blues guitarist Phil Guy."

Danny Federici, 1/23/50 - 4/17/08. Born in Flemingston, New Jersey, Danny was a founding member of the E Street Band. He played the organ and accordion. Danny and Bruce Springsteen met at age 18 and played music together for 40 years. He died of melanoma cancer. Danny was 58.

Anyone who knows me is aware that Bruce and his Band are very special to me. I wept upon hearing that Danny had lost his battle with melanoma. The E Street band is not longer "whole" without Danny and for Bruce, he lost one of his closest friends. Bruce gave a very touching eulogy, part of it reads "Of course we all grow up and we know “it’s only rock and roll”…but it’s not. After a lifetime of watching a man perform his miracle for you, night after night, it feels an awful lot like love."

Bo Diddley, 12/30/28 - 6/2/2008. Born in McComb, Mississippi, Bo will be remembered as for his role in bringing blues to rock and roll. He is a legend and has collaborated with many of the biggest names in music. Bo was also known for his characteristic rectangular guitar. He died of heart failure, surrounded by family members. Bo was 79.

I am glad that Bo had a long life, he contributed so much to the music world and will always be remembered. He's all the big honors and awards from rock and roll and blues music. And as he sings here, "Bo Diddley put the rock in rock and roll."

Isaac Hayes, 8/20/42 - 8/10/08. Born in Covington, Tennessee, Isaac was known for being a singer, songwriter, producer and actor with a focus on soul and funk. His career spanned almost four decades. He died of natural causes in his home. Isaac was 65.

Isaac had it going on in so many ways - as an actor, songwriter, producer, humanitarian. He also had a voice acting job as a popular character on "South Park" which ended rather unpleasantly. I think this video is a classic.

LeRoi Moore, 9/7/61 - 8/19/08. Born in Charlottesville, Virginia, LeRoi is best knows as a founding member and saxophonist of Dave Mathews Band, He played bass, baritone, tenor, alto and soprano sax as well as the flute, bass clarinet and oboe. LeeRoi was injured in an ATV accident in June '08 and suffered broken ribs and a punctured lungs. He died two months later as a result of those injuries. He was 46.

A very tragic death. It seemed that LeRoi would recover from this accident and was doing well. So when he suddenly died, it was a shock. I remember hearing he had passed away and that the band, who was touring here in Los Angeles at the time, chose to continue with the concert that night. My first thought was that it seemed a bit cold to go on stage the same night one of their members died. But Dave Mathews said its what LeRoi would have wanted. It probably provided the fans a chance to grieve together.

Richard William Wright, 7/28/08 - 9/15/08 was born in Middlesex, England. He was a self-taught pianist and keyboardist and is best known for being a founding member of Pink Floyd. His keyboards have a distinct sound that can be heard in many of their classic songs. He died of an undisclosed form of cancer. Richard was 65.

Can you imagine Pink Floyd without Richard's keyboards? He was brilliant. Many people don't realize that he also occasionally sang lead vocals. I think David Gilmore says it well here, "No one can replace Richard Wright. He was my musical partner and my friend. In the welter of arguments about who or what was Pink Floyd, Rick's enormous input was frequently forgotten. He was gentle, unassuming and private but his soulful voice and playing were vital, magical components of our most recognised Pink Floyd sound."

Levi Stubbs, (Levi Stubbles), 6/6/36 - 10/17/08. Born in Detroit, Michigan Levi was the lead vocalist of the Motown R&B group The Four Tops. He was a natural baritone but most of their hit songs were written in a tenor range to "give the lead vocals a sense of urgency". Some of those hits include "Baby I Need Your Loving", "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)", "Standing in the Shadows of Love", "Bernadette", and "Ain't No Woman (Like the One I've Got)". Levi passed away in his sleep. He was 72.

One of my favorite vocalists of all time because his songs made me feel and dance and smile. He and his wife, Clineice, were married from 1969 till his death and had five children. To me that says a lot about him as a person and makes the lyrics of the songs he sang all that more special. I could watch these guys perform for hours, they has class and grace. Mitch Mitchell, (John Mitchell) 7/9/47 - 11/12/08. Born in Middlesex, England, Mitch was best known as the drummer for The Jimi Hendrix Experience. Mitch was trained as a jazz drummer and many believe him to be one of the top ten drummers of all time. He died in his sleep while on tour performing Hendrix songs. Mitch was 62.

I remember the moment I heard of Mitch's death. I was pulling into the parking lot after my lunch break and Cynthia Fox announced it on KLOS. It was hard to believe since he had just performed a few nights before in LA, and I had tickets to the show (but was unable to attend). I suppose for him, it was the best possible way to die, no suffering just passing from one life to the next. Here is a drum solo, a very passionate and talented player.

Odetta,(Odetta Holmes), 12/31/30 - 12/2/08. Born in Birmingham, Alabama, Odetta was a singer, actress, guitarist, songwriter, and a human rights activist. She was often referred to as "The Voice of the Civil Rights Movement". She died of heart disease. Odetta was 77.

Odetta never slowed down even as she advanced in age and her health declined. Reading about her was very inspirational. She was highly regarded by many musicians and human rights activists and was hoping to sing at Pres. Obama's inauguration but died a month prior.

Billy Powell (William Norris Powell) 6/3/52 - 1/28/09. Born in Corpus Christi, Texas Billy was the long-time keyboard player for Lynyrd Skynyrd. He was hired as their roadie and upon hearing him play his own version of "Freebird" was asked to join the band. Billy died in his home of a heart attack. He was 56.

I wonder how if felt to be the roadie for this great band then be asked to join and be one of them! That must have been exciting for Billy, and they made a good call by recognizing his talents.

Michael Jackson (Michael Joseph Jackson) 8/29/58 - 6/25/09. Michael was born in Gary, Indiana and started his career at age 5. He was one of the most successful performers of all time known for his singing, dancing, songwriting and choreography. Michael suffered from drug addiction and died of an overdose (confirmation of this pending). He was 50.

Wow, how does one begin to write about thier lifetime memories of Michael Jackson. Michael was a year older than me, I grew up watching him from his earliest days on television. I never stopped watching, I loved his music, his style and mostly hid theatrical dancing and performing. Attending a Michael Jackson concert was like watching a master magician who could also dance and sing. It was one of the most enjoyable shows I've ever seen. There are lots of nasty things said about Michael and I don't know what he did or didn't do that was wrong, but I really believe that Michael himself was like a child in many ways. I think he was also messed up emotionally and spend his life trying to find "normal" or trying to find something that would allow him to cope. I truly do believe that his generous and humanitarian efforts have helped millions. He was known not just to send money - but to go himself, see the needs and ask for help for specific kids he heard about or met. As unpopular as it may be to like Michael Jackson, I would be lying if I said I didn't like him, care about him and feel sad for him. His life was far from easy or normal. Money doesn't buy peace, joy and contentment. I hope that it there was foul play in his death they get to the bottom of it but my guess is it was Micheal's choices that led to his death.

Eric Norman Woolfson 3/18/45 - 12/2/09. Eric was born in Glasgow, UK. He was a founding member of the Alan Parsons Project, he wrote songs and played piano. After leaving the band he continues his musical career in theater. He was married to the same woman, Hazel, from 1969 to his death. Eric died of cancer. He was 64.

James Owen Sullivan ("The Rev") 2/10/81 - 12/28/09. James was born in Huntington Beach, CA. He was the drummer and back-up vocalist for Avenged Sevenfold. James was a very talented musician who also played guitar, bass and piano and wrote songs. He was found dead in his home, cause of death still pending. James was 28.

A very sad death that hits close to home literally and because my son is a big fan of this band. It would surprise me if there are not drugs involved, I hope not, but chances are....I hope this young man's life is a reminder to all his fans that "partying" can be deadly if it leads to abuse, addiction or over consumption.

Ronnie James Dio 7/10/42 – 5/16/10. Born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Ronnie was a rock and roll legend known for his vocals and songwriting. He's been in several heavy metal bands including Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Heaven & Hell, and his own band Dio. Ronnie was also the guy who made the heavy metal "horns" popular. He died after a courageous battle with stomach cancer. Ronnie was 67 years old.

It was a shock to hear of Ronnie's death, I had heard he was improving. This was definitely a huge loss for many of us, Ronnie was special, an icon. A good guy. A unique voice that will always be recognizable. I could feel a wave of grief wash across the world as each fan heard the news. Thank you, Ronnie, for making heavy metal awesome. You will be missed.

Gerry (Gerald) Rafferty 4/16/47- 1/4/11. Born in Paisley, Scotland, Gerry got into a band in the 60's called "Humblebums". In 1972 he formed the band Stealer's Wheel and had a huge hit with "Stuck in the Middle". In 1978, he cut a solo album, City to City, which included "Baker Street". The album sold over 5.5 million copies. Gerry played piano and guitar and has a very smooth voice. He suffered from liver disease and died peacefully with his daughter at his side.

Baker Street, Stuck in the Middle and Right Down the Line are all on my iPod. I can hear those songs and immediately be transported back in time.

Clarence Clemons 1/11/46 - 6/18/11. Clarence was born in Norfolk, Virginia His father gave him his first saxaphone when he was nine years old. He played for his high school jazz band. He was also a great football player in high school and recieved scholarships to college. The Cleveland Browns offered him a trial on their NFL team but the day before he was to start he was in a serious car accident which ended his football career. The first band Clarence was part of was a cover band called The Vibratones, they did covers of James Brown tunes. He moved to Newark, New Jersey in 1962 and worked as a counselor for emotionally disturbed children. The story of his first time meeting Bruce Springsteen is legendary. Its been told several ways by both men, but the bottom line is, it was "love at first site" and on October 21, 1972 the E-Street Band was formed. The chemistry Clarnece and Bruce had on stage was one of the highlights of each performance. In later years he had to sit during most of the concerts due to two hip replacements surgeries. on June 12, 2011 Clarence suffered a stroke and underwent two surgeries. Reports said he was in serious but stable condition, but he died of complications 6 days later.

For me personally, this death hit me hard. I heard the news moments before entering the stadium to see U2 perform in Anaheim, CA. The radio announcer simply said "Clarence Clemons is gone. This is for Clarence." Then they played "Jungleland". My sister and I wept. I felt so many things at that moment - shock (I thought he was getting better), sadness, and devastation that The E Street Band would never be the same again. For selfish reasons I was disappointed that the feeling of hearing certain songs live would never be the same. Clarence added so much to the band. His sax solos are what made Bruce's lyrics come alive. Some songs, specifically "Jungleland" would still be good, but not great. Bruce gave the eulogy at Clarence's funeral and you can read about it here. Goodbye, Big Man, you will be missed by millions of fans around the world.
